About David Long:
David Long was born in Tooele, Utah on April 28, 1966. He spent his childhood years growing up in the small community of Stockton, Utah. David learned to hunt at a very early age and could always be found pursuing jackrabbits in the foothills just east of town. Even at this young age, David didn’t hesitate to venture off by himself while hunting.
David’s family relocated to Big Piney, Wyoming when he was 12 years old. Two years later, he was old enough to hunt mule deer and took on several small jobs to make enough money to buy a .270 Remington Model 700 ADL.
A couple of years later, David was already investing in backpacking equipment and doing solo backcountry trips before he was even out of high school. The high country was David’s place of choice to pursue trophy mulies. He has never looked back since.
David now pursues trophy mulies in two, sometimes three, western states every fall. It doesn’t matter what time of year it is, David generally can be found doing something to do with mule deer. Whether it be scouting in the spring and summer, hunting in the fall or filming bucks in the winter, you can bet that David will be in the field trying to learn more about mule deer behavior.
David is currently an official measurer for the Boone and Crockett Club and the North American Shed Hunters Club. His extensive “hands on” experience measuring antlers, as well as viewing literally hundreds of bucks per year, gives David the expertise and background necessary to compile a book of this category.
In addition, David is a field editor for Eastmans’ Hunting Journal and has made several appearances on the Eastmans’ TV to discuss mule deer strategies and the proper backpacking equipment needed to pursue bucks in the backcountry. David has written numerous hunting and how-to articles for Eastmans’ Hunting Journal over the years and has appeared on the cover twice.
In 1998, David co-authored the tremendously successful book, Wyoming’s Finest Mule Deer. The book included photos and stories of all of the biggest mule deer bucks ever killed in the state of Wyoming. The book was limited to a production of 4,000 copies and is currently out of print. The book is a must for anyone wanting to pursue mule deer in the state of Wyoming.
David didn’t stop there. In 2000, He released his first mule deer video, In Pursuit of Magnum Mulies. Two years later, the second video in the series, Magnum Mulies 2 – The Pursuit Continues was released. Then in 2003, the final installment in the series, Magnum Mulies – The Final Pursuit was released. After the third video was released, David gave up packing the video camera because he wanted to focus all of his efforts on hunting, rather than filming.
Over the years, David has had tremendous success hunting public land mulies. He has developed a public land hunting method that obviously works. In this book, he will share that hunting method as well as the tips and tactics he has learned over the last 25 years of pursuing trophy bucks in the high country.
